Trapped ions allow unsurpassed control over their electronic and motional states. Microfabricated traps allow for engineered control of ion position and motion. In a circularly symmetric trap we are developing techniques for coherent control over angular momentum states of ion rings. We are extending this technology to build new traps optimized for trapping long ion chains.
