The Importance of Mental Health

  • More than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness (National Institute of Mental Health, 2022)
  • UW grads and undergrads were asked, “In the past 4 weeks, how many days have you felt that emotional or mental difficulties have hurt your academic performance?” 84% reported at least once, and 55% reported three or more times(UW Healthy Minds Study, 2020).
  • 10% of UW students reported suicidal ideation in 2020 (UW Healthy Minds Study, 2020).
  • More than 70% of UW non-binary, trans, Latinx, and Native ASEs reported feeling that they didn’t belong at UW (UW-UAW Equity Survey, 2019).
  • Graduate students are six times more likely than the general population to experience depression and anxiety.
