Principal Investigator

Hossein Naghavi

Hossein Naghavi is an assistant professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington and PI of the Terahertz Integrated MicroElectronics Lab (TIME Lab). He received his Ph.D. in 2023 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, focusing on terahertz integrated circuits. He received B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology and the University of Tehran, Iran, respectively. From 2016 to 2018, he was with the Radiation Lab at the University of Michigan as a research scholar, where he contributed to the development of the first fully integrated terahertz inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging system. Also, from 2012 to 2016, he worked at the Antenna Type Approval Laboratory at the University of Tehran, where he implemented several antenna and radio frequency measurement setups based on IEEE, FCC, and ETSI standards. His research focuses on the mm-wave and terahertz integrated circuit design, especially for imaging, spectroscopy, metrology, and communication applications.

Yannan Liu

Yannan Liu is a Ph.D. candidate of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington. He received B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington. Since 2018, he has worked under Professor Yasuo Kuga’s instruction. In 2023, he joined the TIME lab and is working under the co-instruction of Professor Hossein Naghavi and Professor Yasuo Kuga. His research focuses on antenna design, especially for harsh environments and material characterization.

Xiangyu Zhao

Xiangyu Zhao received his M.Sc degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Michigan in 2024. He received B.Eng. in Electronic Information Engineering from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Chengdu, China, in 2022. He joined the TIME Lab in 2024, focusing his studies and research on mm-wave and terahertz integrated circuits.

Zi Zhang

Zi Zhang received her B.E. degree in Electronic Science and Technology from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Chengdu, China, in 2023. From 2023 to 2024, she was a research assistant at the IPG Lab at UESTC, where she worked on chips for molecular clocks. Her research interests include RF/mm-Wave communication and sensing circuits.


MSc Students

Shruti Chakraborty

Shruti Chakraborty is a Master’s student in the department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Washington and is currently working with Professor Hossein Naghavi in the Terahertz Integrated MicroElectronics Lab (TIME Lab). She received her B. Sc. Degree in Mechanical Engineering at University of California, Merced. From 2018 to 2020, she worked alongside Professor Brandon Stark, where she simulated randomized drone collision patterns and parameterized the data collected from different terrains and weather conditions to detect, develop and enforce safe surroundings for drones. Additionally, alongside Professor YangQuan Chen, she adapted fractional order calculus modelling in several complex mechanical system modelling applications not limited to Euler/Lagrangian mechanics and fractional order dampening control theory. Between 2021 to 2023, she worked as a Thermal-Mechanical Engineer at both Intel and Solidigm for Client SSD technology. She hopes to continue applying her background into plasma-wave microelectronics applications in terahertz integrated circuit design under Professor Hossein Naghavi’s instruction.

Denil Sabu

Denil Sabu is an aspiring analog design engineer pursuing his masters of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington. He received his B.Sc. in 2024 from the University of Washington focusing on integrated circuits. His current research at the Terahertz Integrated MicroElectronics Lab (TIME Lab) focuses on delayed injection-locked oscillators.

 Zhuoran Wu

Zhuoran Wu received his B.E. degree in Automation from South China University of Technology (SCUT), Guangzhou, China, in 2023. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington. In 2024, he joined the Terahertz Integrated MicroElectronics (TIME) Lab, where he focuses on sub-THz Dielectric Resonator Antenna design.
