Below are some important tasks and resources specific to our international students on an F1 visa.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"GEMS\"><\/a>GEMS Admitted Students Next Steps<\/h2>\n<p>Check out this <a href=\"https:\/\/grad.uw.edu\/admission\/understanding-the-application-process\/international-applicant-information\/admitted-international-graduate-students\/\">resource <\/a>for F1 students from Graduate Enrollment Management Services (GEMS) to learn about requesting your I-20 document and planning for your arrival in the US.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"iss_checklist\" style=\"background-image: url('img\/anchor.gif')\"><\/a>ISS Pre-Arrival and Post-Arrival Checklist<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have confirmed enrollment (accepted the offer as outlined in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.ece.uw.edu\/newpmp\/next-steps\/\">Next Steps<\/a>), start on the Pre-Arrival Checklist. Once you&#8217;ve entered the U.S., start on the Post-Arrival Checklist.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iss.washington.edu\/new-students\/pre-arrival\/\">New Student Pre-Arrival Checklist<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/iss.washington.edu\/new-students\/post-arrival-checklist\/\">New Student Post-Arrival Checklist<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"insurance\"><\/a>Insurance<\/h2>\n<p>International students at UW are required by federal and state laws to maintain health insurance while studying in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iship.washington.edu\/\">International Student Health Insurance Program<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/student.lifewiseac.com\/uw\/ship\/\">ISHIP Benefit Booklets and Summary of Coverage<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"cptopt\"><\/a>CPT and OPT<\/h2>\n<p>PMP students are eligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/iss.washington.edu\/work\/f1-employment\/cpt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CPT<\/a> (internship) and <a href=\"https:\/\/iss.washington.edu\/work\/f1-employment\/opt\/post-completion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OPT<\/a> (post-graduation work authorization) opportunities. In addition to the 12-month Optional Practical Training (OPT), F1 students are eligible for the 24 month STEM OPT extension, allowing you to gain valuable work experience in the US after graduation!<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"international_student_resources\"><\/a>International Student Resources<\/h2>\n<h3>International Student Services (ISS)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iss.washington.edu\/\">ISS<\/a> is comprised of professionally trained advising staff who are available to help students understand benefits and restrictions of F-1 and J-1 visa status. Questions about your visa, travel documents, OPT, or CPT? Give your ISS adviser a call!<\/p>\n<h3>Foundation for International Understanding Through Students (FIUTS)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiuts.org\/\">FIUTS<\/a> organizes student programming that focuses on international awareness, cross cultural communication, and leadership. They offer many regular events around the greater Seattle area like conversation groups, hikes, and tours. It&#8217;s a great way to meet others and get connected to the Seattle community!<\/p>\n<h3>Center for International Relations &amp; Cultural Leadership Exchange (CIRCLE)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/circle\/\">CIRCLE<\/a> is the UW&#8217;s primary portal to resources, community, and activities that help international and domestic students maximize their Husky Experience.<\/p>\n<h3>Registered Students Organization (RSO)<\/h3>\n<p>At UW, we have more than 1,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/huskylink.washington.edu\/\">registered student organizations (RSOs)<\/a> on the Seattle campus.
