Please visit the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/benefits\/insurance\/health\/graduate-appointees\/gaip-eligibility-coverage-overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GAIP Insurance<\/a>&nbsp;page for detailed information.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mental Health<\/h2>\n<p>The importance of mental health:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness (National Institute of Mental Health, 2022)<\/li>\n<li>UW grads and undergrads were asked, \u201cIn the past 4 weeks, how many days have you felt that emotional or mental difficulties have hurt your academic performance?\u201d 84% reported at least once, and 55% reported three or more times(UW Healthy Minds Study, 2020).<\/li>\n<li>10% of UW students reported suicidal ideation in 2020 (UW Healthy Minds Study, 2020).<\/li>\n<li>More than 70% of UW non-binary, trans, Latinx, and Native ASEs reported feeling that they didn\u2019t belong at UW (UW-UAW Equity Survey, 2019).<\/li>\n<li>Graduate students are six times more likely than the general population to experience depression and anxiety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Student resources:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wellbeing.uw.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Husky Health &amp; Well-Being<\/a>:<\/strong>&nbsp;a one-stop portal for many different resources related to peer health advocacy, safety, recreational classes, counseling services, and medical care.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/counseling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Counseling Center<\/a>:<\/strong>&nbsp;offers multiple options for students seeking help coping with stress and mental health concerns.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wellbeing.uw.edu\/unit\/hall-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hall Health<\/a><\/strong>:&nbsp;offers a wide range of medical and mental health services.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Privacy<\/h2>\n<p>TA\u2019s are reminded that the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/students\/reg\/ferpa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)<\/a>&nbsp;of 1974 requires that the University treat student records in a confidential manner. Please do not leave any current student work (graded or ungraded) lying around in offices or hallways for open access. That is in complete opposition to the university\u2019s privacy policy&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.leg.wa.gov\/WAC\/default.aspx?cite=478-140-024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(WAC 478-140-024(5)<\/a>. If you plan on distributing grades, papers and exams through departmental mailboxes or hallways you have to ask permissions from the students. Ideally, make plans to return homework\/reports\/exams either in labs\/quiz sections, lecture sections, or during your office hours.
